The Mayor’s Appeal

The Right Worshipful The Mayor of Durham, Councillor Grenville Holland
The County Durham Society for the Blind and Partially Sighted
The Mayor’s Appeal Charity 2008-2009

The County Durham Society for the Blind and Partially Sighted was established in 1987. It currently provides free services to over 2,300 blind and partially sighted people across County Durham. These services include an information service; community support (e.g. driver/escorts to eye clinics); outreach support to housebound people (e.g.to help fill in forms); free loan and delivery of specially adapted CD/radio cassette machines, Perkins braillers, and other specialist equipment; two talking newspapers covering North and South Durham; a macular disease support group which meets in Durham City; a Resource Centre in Durham City which provides demonstration and sale of specialist equipment; a befriending scheme; telephone support; and a computer mentoring scheme to introduce blind and partially sighted people to magnification and talking software.

Not only will an event such as this raise vital funding for charity but will hopefully put the Durham Santa Stroll on the UK Christmas Festival’s map.
